What is van insurance?

Van insurance helps protect you financially in the event your vehicle gets damaged, stolen, or is involved in an accident.

The type of cover you need will depend on a number of factors, including whether you’re using the vehicle for business or private use, the type of van you own, and what you use it for.

Do I need van insurance?

Yes; like car insurance, van insurance is a legal requirement if you drive it on public roads. The minimum insurance you must take out is third-party cover.

Even if you’re going for a quick trip in your van or borrowing one from a friend, it’s important that you take out cover.

The only exception is if you’ve got a Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) and your van is being kept on a private road or driveway, or in a garage.

What level of cover should I get?

There are three levels of insurance for your van: third party cover; third party, fire and theft (TPFT); and comprehensive cover.

This will only cover damage to other people, their vehicle, or their property in the event of an incident. This cover is the minimum level of cover you must get.

This covers injury or damage to other people, their vehicles, and their property, as well as your van in the event it gets stolen or damaged by fire.

This includes everything covered under TPFT cover, plus any damage caused to your own van, even if you cause it. It’s the highest level of cover you can get, but, surprisingly, is often the most affordable as insurers find that, statistically, those on fully comp policies are less likely to claim on their insurance.

All the van insurance extras you need

We know that every van owner and their needs are different, but, having spoken personally with tens of thousands of you, we also know you all have one thing in common: you want to keep your van and its contents safe – including any goods and tools you use for business. Rest assured that you’re in safe hands with us. Policies can include:

Covers goods against theft, loss or damage when they’re being transported in your van.

Covers all your tools overnight and while they are being loaded or unloaded from your van, subject to your van security.

Covers your personal belongings while they’re stored in your van against theft, damage from fire, flood or lightning, and malicious damage.

A van breakdown can put a stop to your well-thought-out holiday or business operations. Breakdown cover helps get you back on the road.

Helps cover the costs involved should you or your vehicle damage someone else’s property or cause accidental bodily injury.

Courtesy van cover

Some policies can provide you with a courtesy vehicle if your van is involved in an accident and can’t be fixed promptly, though this is not always guaranteed.

Filling your vehicle with the wrong fuel is an easy mistake to make, and one that’s made hundreds of times a day. We can arrange the draining and removal of the contaminated fuel.

If you stop driving for two years or more, you usually lose any no claims bonus you’ve built up. Thankfully, we work a little differently and can take your expired NCB into account when you get a quote with us.

How much is van insurance?

The cost of your van insurance depends on a multitude of factors, including your driving history, whether you’ve got previous experience driving similar vehicles, any no claims bonus you’ve built up, and the type of van you want to insure.

It’s usually best to get a personalised quote from us directly so we can give you a better idea of how much your cover will be. Rest assured that our close relationships with underwriters give us – and you – access to some of the best deals available, including many you can’t find elsewhere.

Why is van insurance so expensive?

The cost of your insurance depends on a wide range of factors, so it can be difficult to pinpoint exactly why you may be facing high van insurance costs. In a lot of cases, personal van insurance premiums are comparable to private car insurance quotes, especially if you’ve got previous experience driving larger vehicles.

If you’re using your van for business-related activities, you might find that your quote is a little more expensive. This is because most commercial van drivers tend to drive for longer hours, and their vans are often targeted by thieves, which can increase the risks involved with covering them.

If you’ve filled in dozens of online forms and you’re still getting a quote that seems too high, it might be time to talk to the specialists. With over [[ FLUX_EXPERIENCE ]] years of experience covering all types of vehicles, we’re well versed in helping our customers find the right policy at a great price.
